Dan Saltzman served as the architect and major champion for the Portland Children’s Initiative, which successfully created the Children’s Levy in 2002 and was overwhelmingly renewed by voters in 2008. He is the chair of the Levy's Allocation Committee. His other responsibilities include management of the Bureau of Environmental Services.

Dan was born and raised in Portland. He graduated from Beaverton High School, received a B.S. from Cornell University's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and an M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent many years in the private sector as the principal in an environmental engineering firm. He also served as a staff assistant to Congressman (now Sen.) Ron Wyden.

Dan served as Multnomah County Commissioner from 1993-1998 and has served on the Board of Directors for Portland Community College and HOST Community Development. He currently sits on Metro’s Local Government Policy Advisory Committee. Dan's focus for Portland’s economic and social health is protecting the environment and helping Portland to achieve a more sustainable future, preventing child abuse and domestic violence and making Portland’s children a higher priority.
